Decided to start adding my very best pics to JPG magazine online…. I am not stopping using Flickr. I am starting to reflect in my habits what brands need to address online now. I am starting to want levels of filtering that match different needs. JPG gives me the access to a semi pro level of photography whereas Flickr I am using as a ‘channel’ of my life. I also use Facebook and this blog of course. This is where it starts to get interesting…

In the past we had single simple channels, then that became multichannel, then came interconnectedness which provided transport and now comes highly individualised content which is the glue….This content has to be what I want and delivered how I want it delivered. But what fascinates me most is the number of touch points for me and the number of distinct profiles I am creating…

Just saw this in the Guardian…
“The National Archives and Microsoft yesterday announced a partnership to prevent what was described as “a digital dark age”, and unlock millions of unreadable stored computer files.

While anyone able to follow a Norman scribe’s handwriting can read the Domesday Book, on display at the archives, and work out who owned land, fishing rights and beehives in the 11th century, the software for many 10-year-old files - including thousands of government records - is already obsolete.”

Too bloody right…I have just dumped loads of old unreadable disks and diskettes that I can no longer read. God knows what was on them.

In terms of archiving, the UK has been one of the leaders in the field. A visit to the national archive at Kew can present documents going back a thousand years. The Norman conquest was made complete by the creation of an administrative layer that later became the civil service. This service has provided continuity ever since. I am inclined to think that maybe it is one reason why we have had only one civil war in that time and been so remarkably stable.

I am also reminded hearing on radio a few years ago a Kurdish guy ringing up to bemoan the loss of their culture as Saddam wiped it out. The Guest in the studio (another Kurd) assured him that he needn’t worry too much as a great deal of records about Kurdistan were held in the UK; a relic of empire…

I wonder if this and other archiving projects will just end up printing stuff out on paper which as far as I can see is still the only accessible long term storage medium. I would however really like to see a super archive totally open to everyone…

Elmbridge council recently completed the building of “The Heart”, a brand new shopping centre and apartments in Walton on Thames. Confounding expectations they have managed to attract major retailers and the centre despite already looking dated and being a major wind tunnel (they could have tested Concorde in there today) seems to be an initial success. But you know sometimes the devil is in the detail and as I was looking today at a display in the new centre that deals with Walton’s place in the history of cinema (it was the first commercial studio site in the world…honest), I noticed the spelling error above. An extra ‘O’ in Hollywood…what a shame.

I don’t know why Elmbridge don’t make more of the fact it was the home of cinema. Everything else in the UK is ‘heritaged’ almost immediately it is built so why do this council make nothing of it?
