Wonky playing field

by neil.cowan on September 16, 2009

Football comes in for a great deal of criticism but when I see the current FIFA ban on Chelsea being used as the model by which bankers might be employed, I get confused.

And while I’m having a rant…when football fans chant abuse at players, no one seems to mind. That’s part of the beautiful game. Indeed, rival fans just dream up or regurgitate some of their own stuff back in order to up the ante. And so it goes on. As long as it doesn’t culminate in another West Ham v. Millwall debacle, it’s OK

Unlike the prime minister, football fans don’t shrink from using the ‘c’ word. Or the ‘f’ word or ‘b’ word or any other word or combination of words thereof.

So when a footballer goes and gives them something back, why the fuss? I’m NOT talking of him (Adebayor) allegedly stamping on Robin van Persie’s face although I’m not sure the ‘allegedly’ is necessary having seen the slow-mo TV playbacks. No…I’m talking of him running the length of the pitch and taunting the Arsenal supporters who were taunting and abusing him before / during the match.

I didn’t see any of them being cautioned by anyone. None of them has been charged by the FA to respond by 1800 BST today. Level playing field?
